My computer went bluescreen while I had my fic open on Wordpad. When I opened the file again after restarting the computer, THE ENTIRE DOCUMENT IS BLANK. Like, the scrollbar is exactly the same size and the last modified time stamp is correct, but THERE ARE NO WORDS. WHERE ARE THE WORDS. WHERE ARE THE 25,000 WORDS I FUCKING WROTE ON THIS FUCKING DOCUMENT.

System Restore doesn't recover personal files, it only formats program settings -- BUT LOL I TRIED IT ANYWAY and it didn't work .____.

try to right click at the file and choose restore previous version, but I don't know if that really can save your previous work..

I think the file most likely gone, but try to check temp folder, there's chance even if it's just a little...

I don't think I have this kind of functionality with .rtf documents (Wordpad)... Wordpad apparently doesn't save temp folders because it is a really really basic program. I am suddenly learning so much about this stupid program now that I'm googling the hell out of the keywords "Wordpad recovery file save temp." The consensus seems to be You're outta luck, the file's gone bro. D: D: D: D: D:

No, the file size is still huge, 179KB. If I copy and paste the entire document into Microsoft Word, I still get the same number of pages as I was supposed to have, expect it's just white space. fjdasflda;sjf fdajkf;a my life!!!!!

1) I don't like having red/green spellcheck lines everywhere in my document.
2) I don't like how "neat" and "professional" things look on Word because I like my drafts to look simple and draft-like.
3) It takes like 10 seconds longer for Word to load than Wordpad.
4) Word uses Calibri font by default; Wordpad uses Arial. Arial >>> everything else.
5) I just like Wordpad, it has like zero features and I enjoy that.
6) I am a colossal idiot.

Yeah I feel like there must be something saved there, since the document size hasn't changed. Just... all the words are gone. I did ask my friend and she said she looked at the hexfile or something (harioto SORRY I have no idea what you were talking about although I really appreciated your help!!!) and there were just "null" characters which I took to mean that the file was blanked out. I did all of your suggestions; no luck! AUGHHHH.

Oh no. I feel more sorry for you than anyone else. I rly hope you can recover it. What's the current file size. As long as it's not 0 I think it's "recoverable." Have you tried copying the file in a flashdrive and opening it in a diff computer?

I don't even know what I'd 25,000 of my words. I'm sorry. :(

I SHOULD HAVE IMPORTED INTO GOOGLEDOCS! I did for my first fundraiser fic, but I just kept on forgetting to do it for this one! I SHOULD HAVE SAVED IT IN WORD TOO! I would periodically copy and paste the ENTIRE FIC into Word to check the word count, and still I just never bothered to save it as a .doc file. Oh maaaan it's like I practically ASKED for this to happen, didn't I? DDDDDDDDD:

i usually write on the draft section of my gmail then recently moved over to gdocs. im just so scared of losing works lol cos i know once i lose it i wont go back to rewrite it cos i'll just mostly be bitter about my loss .___.

maybe try open the wordpad file with other programs? is it a .txt or .rtf? if so i think you can try open it with notepad or a browser maybe? :S

It's .rtf but I tried with various Word programs and everything shows the document as a blank, ergh. :(

I'm extremely extremely bitter right now (and mad at myself for not backing up my documents, mostly). It was a fundraiser fic so I will definitely rewrite it, but I really, really, really... do not feel happy about doing so.

Late reply is late, but I'm going on a random fanfic spree and came across this and it's only been one day:

Copy paste into notepad? Clearly copy/paste into Word didn't help, but notepad is only the absolute raw contents. Clearly there's something there, even if you can't see it or access it, but notepad does absolutely nothing except for plain text. I know I write my LJ entries there because it holds onto the HTML and doesn't add anything unexpected.

Edit: Also, if that doesn't work, right click on the file and use the "open with" option to open it in notepad to begin with. Don't know if that will change anything but anything is worth a try at this point.

No, not late at all! The past two days I've been at school for long hours so I don't get to check my messages until pretty late at night, and then of course I don't get the time to actually try whatever I can to get the file back.

I'd previously tried all your suggestions but I did them again after I read your comment just to be absolutely sure... and yeah, it's still a blank. The something that's there is apparently 182,393 spaces. Blergh.

ikr. I was thinking today, could I rewrite that fic from scratch? And the immediate answer was VERY MUCH NO. I remember the plot, but I seriously can't remember each part I wrote, and that's really tough to deal with because I remember being proud of a number of lines I'd written, because I was really trying to be a good writer in terms of content, not just moving the plot along... ugh ugh ugh. This whole mess just leaves me as discouraged and angry as hell. Disappointment is my middle name right now!! Thank you so much for your support though! It means a lot! :')
